VirtaMed launches world’s first virtual reality simulator for ankle arthroscopy

September 26, 2017
According to experience, only an ankle specialist can perform ankle arthroscopy in a safe manner. As the procedure is not very common, gaining the experience to become an ankle specialist is difficult. This is why VirtaMed created the ArthroS™ Ankle, the world’s first high-fidelity simulator for ankle arthroscopy.

Ankle arthroscopy is not as common as knee, shoulder, or even hip arthroscopy, which means real-life training opportunities are scarce. To further complicate the issue, the ankle is a tight joint and the risk of damaging cartilage or nerves is higher than during the more common arthroscopic surgeries. The curved bone horizon is disorienting, and surgeons often lose track of the exact location of the arthroscopic camera in the absence of visual landmarks.

“We have learned that even experienced knee and shoulder surgeons commonly fail to reach safety standards when performing ankle surgery”, says VirtaMed’s Senior Product Manager, Dr. Peter Schenk. In other words, being a good arthroscopic surgeon is not enough for a safe ankle procedure: you need an ankle specialist.

This is why VirtaMed is adding another member to its ArthroS™ platform in December 2017. The VirtaMed ArthroS™ Ankle Module features the standard VirtaMed benefits such as adapted original tools, authentic haptic feedback through the life-like anatomic ankle model, highly realistic virtual reality graphics, numerous different anatomies and pathologies, and a fully customizable course structure for independent proficiency-based learning.

What makes all VirtaMed ArthroS™ modules unique on the market is the realism of the anatomic model. The ankle joint features both anterior and posterior access, and the patient can be treated in prone and supine positions. The joint can be freely manipulated in dorsiflexion and plantar flexion, and the model even enables distraction.

The VirtaMed ArthroS™ simulator already includes modules for knee, shoulder, and hip arthroscopy, as well as the FAST module for basic skills training. Switching between these modules is easy and the simulator platform is also compatible with VirtaMed products for urological and gynecological training.

VirtaMed works together with leading medical associations across the world to develop tools for training and assessment of medical professionals. The VirtaMed ArthroS™ has been a compulsory part of the annual Swiss Orthopaedic Board Certification Exam since 2013.
