VirtaMed LaparoS™ Nominated for the Prestigious Edison Award

November 23, 2025

The VirtaMed LaparoS™, a mixed reality laparoscopy training simulator, has been nominated for an Edison Award.

The Edison Awards™ are a global award that honors excellence in innovation and new product development. Previous winners of the Edison Award in the medical category have included such companies as Arthrex, Inc., Zimmer Biomet, and Medtronic.

“VirtaMed has invested 20 years into surgical simulation research and development, and our simulators are used by surgeons across the world. The LaparoS applies these decades of expertise for the next generation of laparoscopic simulation training,” noted Raimundo Sierra, CEO of VirtaMed.

The LaparoS is designed to give general surgeons and surgical gynecologists surgical skills training using a deconstructed-skills approach. The simulator renders the inside of the abdomen in real-time, incorporating an anatomic model with haptic feedback to deliver hyper-realistic training scenarios for trainee surgeons. The simulator’s cloud-based learning management system provides proficiency-based feedback that allows trainees to practice independently and then debrief with an instructor later.

Broward Health in Ft Lauderdale, FL was the first hospital in the United States to get a LaparoS after it was released last year. General Surgery Program Director, Dr. Ivan Puente, said:

“It's very realistic... from the moment you walk up to that simulator you can set it up the same way as we do in the operating room. It really gives the residents a very strong feeling that they are in the OR.”
