VirtaMed and the German Knee Society (DKG) will deliver simulation training to the front door of Teaching Hospitals in Germany

February 16, 2021

VirtaMed, the world leader in medical training using mixed reality simulators, and the German Knee Society (DKG) are excited to kick off their combined training initiative at the Martin Luther Krankenhaus in Berlin and introduce a new mobile surgical simulation lab.

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, young orthopedic surgeons have had very few opportunities to train their surgical skills. While the benefits of simulation training are not new to the medical community, the pandemic has further highlighted the significance of this training tool. Leading by example, the surgical simulation lab overcomes the ongoing limitations in patient access, as well as the suspension of elective surgeries, and offers the opportunity to maintain medical training. It is the expression of both VirtaMed’s and DKG’s commitment to find innovative ways to deliver training.

Prof. Wolf Petersen, President of the DKG, said, “The training of residents and future generations of surgeons is an essential subject for the DKG and it is why simulation-based training plays an important part. The lessons drawn from this healthcare crisis prompt us to rethink the way residents are trained. I am delighted that we are partnering with VirtaMed to bring this new training initiative to our residents very soon.”

The mobile simulation lab is equipped with the most advanced arthroscopic simulator, the VirtaMed ArthroS™. The lab will travel to medical institutions across Germany and ensure that orthopedic residents can safely practice their skills outside of the operation room.

This training initiative is building on a similar project that VirtaMed started in Switzerland and is currently on-going in France, where already more than 400 residents benefited from access to simulation training. The VirtaMed team cannot wait to replicate this success in Germany!

Isabel Gauggel, Senior International Business Manager at VirtaMed, added, “I am very thankful and proud that VirtaMed and the DKG are joining forces here to deliver what we believe will be a very impactful medical training in arthroscopic surgery. The mobile simulation lab will allow us to bring expert-developed courses and the most realistic simulator to residents all over Germany. In this exceptional context of the pandemic, our mission will remain to support Education.”
