July 31, 2020

VirtaMed reaches the final of the Swiss MedTech Award 2020

The nominees for the Swiss Medtech Award 2020 have been determined. VirtaMed, along with Aleva Neurotherapeutics and Rheon Medical, prevailed against 24 competitors and move into the final for the coveted trophy. The winning team will be announced during the Swiss Medtech Day on September 21, 2020 in Bern. This year is the third time that the Swiss Medtech Award, sponsored by the Lichtsteiner Foundation, the Straumann Group and Ypsomed, will be presented.

VirtaMed was nominated for the new LaparoS™ surgical simulator, that enable doctors to improve their laparoscopic skills using the next generation of haptic feedback combined with virtual reality graphics. Aleva Neurotherapeutics is a candidate with a new generation of deep brain stimulation systems that aims to improve the success of therapy, for example in Parkinson's patients. Rheon Medical is launching eyeWatch, the world's first non-invasive pressure compensation system for glaucoma, which is revolutionizing the treatment of glaucoma.

"I am always impressed by the innovative strength of the Swiss medical technology industry. There is a lot of work, persistence and passion behind each of these technical developments. All three nominated companies are already successful on the market with their products," commented Peter Biedermann, Managing Director of Swiss Medtech, on the jury's decision.

A total of 27 applications were received for the Swiss Medtech Award 2020. In a two-stage process chaired by Prof. Mirko Meboldt, ETH Zurich, the judges evaluated the innovations presented according to the criteria of patient benefit, contribution to improving health care, technological pioneering spirit and entrepreneurial performance.

“The Swiss Medtech Day is the most important event in the Swiss medical technology industry and therefore the perfect stage for the performance of the three nominees in front of an enthusiastic audience to honor and announce the winner,” says Peter Biedermann.

This press release is also available in German and French.
