VirtaMed LaparoS™ Wins Gold at the Edison Awards
April 22, 2022ZURICH, Switzerland – VirtaMed, the world leader in medical simulation training, has received the prestigious Gold Edison Innovation Award in the Experiential Learning category for the LaparoS™ surgical training simulator. LaparoS™ was recognized among the most innovative entries in a pool of more than 350 submissions.
The Edison Awards honors excellence in innovation and new product development across the globe. An impressive array of nominees were in the running this year, including products developed by Arthrex, Precision Medical Products, Boston Scientific, Bayer and Johnson & Johnson.
We’re honored to be named the recipient of this prestigious award,” said Raimundo Sierra, CEO of VirtaMed. “VirtaMed has invested 20 years into surgical simulation research and development, and our simulators are used by surgeons across the world. LaparoS™ applies these decades of expertise for the next generation of laparoscopic simulation training, and we couldn’t be happier to see it recognized alongside the most innovative ideas in the world."
LaparoS™ is the only virtual reality laparoscopic simulator that requires trainees to accurately position their patient prior to the procedure, choose their own trocar placement in the abdomen, and supports both individual and team training. Using a validated deconstructed-skills training approach, the simulator was designed to provide virtual reality training for general surgeons and surgical gynecologists at all levels of ability.
Traditional simulators, such as box trainers, are less successful at replicating the operating room experience and lack learning-essential components. Recognizing the importance of a life-like training experience, the development team behind LaparoS™ opted to leverage the high-performance Unity development platform. Originally developed for the video game industry, VirtaMed has leveraged this technology to render the inside of the abdomen using 3D digital twin technology and integrated haptic feedback to provide hyper-realistic surgical training.
LaparoS™ has been integrated into training programs at hospitals across the United States including Broward Health in Florida, Guthrie Clinic in Pennsylvania and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
About VirtaMed
VirtaMed believes medical education is powerfully delivered through data-driven simulation solutions. Since 2007, we have developed the leading solutions for training outside the operating room because we believe healthcare professionals should never have to perform a procedure for the first time on a patient. VirtaMed’s simulators provide the most realistic and cost-effective training available for laparoscopic surgeons.
VirtaMed LaparoS™ is the most advanced mixed reality training simulator for minimally invasive surgery training. Surgeons benefit from simulators that train cognitive and psychomotor skills in a safe, realistic and repeatable way. LaparoS™ offers patient positioning, trocar placement, and team training. Condensed training cases teach transferable skills including instrument triangulation, different dissection techniques, lysis of adhesions, safe clip application, and use of electrosurgical instruments.
