Motivation boost: Competing for stars in hysteroscopy at University Hospital Zurich
In February 2011, VirtaMed started a pilot project at its reference center University Hospital Zurich. After two hours of practical training guided by PD Dr. Michael Bajka, the course participants had the possibility to train on the HystSim simulator for one more month - on their own.
Before this course, we had put together a customized course program. Each trainee had the choice how to fulfill this homework task. Due to time conflicts and tough working schedules, we didn't expect much... But:
How many stars can I gain?
This question seemed to have motivated the trainees - much more than we expected. The course participants did not only train until they reached one star for a case to unlock the next module, but they repeated the cases to gain all possible stars!
The idea behind it is simple: Trainees may complete a comprehensive training on the simulator without any further support, completely taught by HystSim. Such individual courses can be created for beginners, intermediate or advanced endoscopists.
Each module has to be unlocked by showing a good performance on the prior case. And each case can be repeated as often as the trainee wants to become even better and thus earn more stars.

The following movie shows the easy training on the simulator. After logging into the system, just click on the "Courses" tab in navigation on the left. You get the overview of different courses. In this example, we created a course for AAGL 2010 as well as for the Essure® procedure developed by Conceptus.
You see the cases that have already been successfully completed with a tickmark and 1-3 stars depending on the performance. The next case can be selected & started, all the others are still locked.
